This talk argues that paintings exhibited in London in the mid-nineteenth century should be understood within polluted atmospheres that shaped not only artistic representations, but also practices of conservation, collecting and display, within a broader culture of technological accommodation to pollution.
Sarah Gould is an Assistant Professor at Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, where she focuses on the study of British art in both her research and teaching. Her academic interests lie at the intersection of the material and ecological meanings of art. She is currently the William C. Seitz Senior Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
