Have you been asked to present your work at a conference in a poster session? Perhaps you’ve started writing a paper about your research and want some tips on how to manage your citations. Are you looking for ways to better communicate your research to a broad audience, including the policymakers who vote on funding for projects like yours?

Join us at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications for an Academic Writing Workshop this June to learn about communicating science to policymakers, how to build an engaging poster presentation and citation management. This workshop is sponsored by NCSA’s Software Working Group. Light refreshments will be provided for in-person attendees.

Speakers:

Megan Johnson, Science Writer, National Center for Supercomputing Applications and ACCESS
Presentation topic: Accessible Research

Policymakers and the general public are unlikely to be experts in your field of research. These groups aren’t subscribing to the scientific journals you publish in, or attending conferences where you present your work, and yet all of them have some say in how your research is funded or supported. That’s why it’s important to be able to effectively communicate the value of your work to these groups. In this 25-minute session, you’ll learn how to speak to non-experts about complex research topics and how to speak to the media to make sure your important work is understood by all.

Carolyn Wisniewski, Senior Director, Writers Workshop, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Laura Stengrim, Associate Teaching Professor and Founding Director of the Speakers Workshop, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Presentation topic: Poster Presentation and Design

Poster presentations provide valuable practice for presenting your work in a more casual atmosphere than headlining a big conference session. In this 25-minute session, experts from the Illinois Writers Workshop and Speakers Workshop will help you learn about communicating your research for conferences and professional meetings with concise and effective posters.
***

Kelli Trei, Biosciences Librarian and Associate Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Presentation Topic: Citation Management

Citation managers help you to quickly create, store, and access your citations. Some allow you to store your research documents and auto-generate bibliographies. In this 25-minute presentation, you’ll learn about using one of the common citation management tools, like Zotero, as well as some general tips about general academic writing, including navigating copyright and read and publish agreements (APCs).
