In 7th century BCE the Greek author Aesop penned a collection of moralizing animal fables that have intrigued writers and delighted audiences, young and old, ever since. This exhibit traces the history of this rich literary tradition from Antiquity to the present day in word and image—for most books are illustrated—with emphasis on the manuscript and printing history. It includes materials from the UIUC Library collection with some unusual examples as well as recent efforts to preserve and make these items available to patrons. The materials are divided into four cases, each of which treats a different time period: Antiquity, Middle Ages, Modernity (16th-19th century), and Present (20th and 21st centuries).
