Illini Cabaret: Music on Main

Start your Homecoming celebration with a special performance in the University Library’s historic Reading Room. Join Archivist and Sousa Archives and Center for American Music Director Scott Schwartz as he and three School of Music students perform on three of the Center’s rare music instruments and discuss the importance of returning the voices to these unique musical wonders from the past. Joe DeMaria, senior oboe music education student, will provide a short performance on the Center’s recently restored 1923 C.G. Conn contrabass sarrusophone. Lucas Yoakam, Doctor of Music Arts (DMA) trumpet performance student, will perform Herbert L. Clarke’s Carnival of Venice on Clarke’s 1907 C.G. Conn cornet used for the Sousa Band’s 1910-1911 world tour. Poorna Kumar, junior trombone performance student and Marching Illini drum major, will demonstrate one of the Center’s historical tenor trombones. Collaborative pianist for this performance is Sarah Schwartz.
