On November 8, 2022, the Biden Administration issued a Notice on the Continuation of the National Emergency With Respect to Iran that reminded that US “relations with Iran have not yet normalized, and the process of implementing the agreements with Iran, dated January 19, 1981, is ongoing.” The current focus on the women’s revolt in Iran suggests that an evolution of the relationship between the West and the Islamic Republic is unlikely. Yet, there is also a history of distinctions and differences between the US and Europe in relation to Iran that culminated in the disagreements over the nuclear deal. What is the current state of affairs in Iran and in Western approaches to Iran? Is an evolution possible, either in terms of regime transformation or in terms of new relationship with the Islamic Republic? Are we forever stuck in 1981? The European Union Center organizes a panel with prestigious experts on Iran to discuss the question of the current revolt and the evolution of International relations under the pressure of current events.

For security reasons, attendance at this panel will be limited to UIUC, UIC, and UIS students, faculty, and staff, and the names of the panelists will not be publicized before the event.
