Join us for a performance and panel discussion as we celebrate the public release of Sentinels of Silence? Whale Watching, Noise, and the Orca. All registered attendees will receive a link to view the documentary in advance of the event.

Sentinels of Silence? Whale Watching, Noise, and the Orca is a 26-minute documentary short, exploring the science and policy issues surrounding the impact of whale watching and a timely debate around proposed policies for licensing and limiting the ways in which commercial and recreational boats can follow and approach the whales.

To kick off the documentary’s free distribution, including for classroom use, join director Mark Pedelty, a fellow of the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment and a panel of scientists, conservationists, and policy advocates on November 4 as they discuss the issue and take questions from the audience. With the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife inviting public input on proposed policies through November 13, these experts will discuss noise as a threat to Southern Resident killer whale recovery and policy efforts to confront this issue.

And listen to international recording artist, Dana Lyons, perform “The Great Salish Sea” to kick things off!

This event is part of a Humanities Without Walls/Mellon-funded project.
