Abstract: This talk will be a high level overview of the data science job landscape. I'll start with a rough taxonomy of different types of data science jobs and describe what the work is like in each. Next I'll offer some suggestions on how to get one of these jobs, and finally I'll conclude with some thoughts on making the transition from academia (and physics) to industry based on my own experiences.

Bio: Henry Hinnefeld is a Senior Data Scientist in the R&D Department at Civis Analytics where he helps develop the methods, tools, and best practices that drive Civis' data science platform. Prior to Civis Henry was a Fellow at the University of Chicago's Data Science for Social Good program, a condensed matter physicist, and a bluegrass fiddler.
