With the development of China's economy, people's consumption has lifted from physical goods to concept level for symbol consumption. However, more and more Chinese young people have got into over-symbolic-consumption. What is the social source that leads to over-symbolic-consumption? The researcher uses the Bourdieu's theory perspective of symbolic capital to study the youth symbol consumption subcultures in China, and to discuss the influence of young people’s symbolic capital on social stratification and identity.

Dr. Tun Wang is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Sichuan University of Science and Engineering in China. His research interests include cultural sociology, education sociology, and stratification.
