Abstract: Although biodiversity is studied at numerous levels, from molecular to ecosystem, data originating from fieldwork and specimens—often from natural history collections—always underpin the research. Examples of discoveries and improved understanding from fieldwork and collection-based research on freshwater fishes are discussed.
