The delivery of blood to skeletal muscle is regulated at the microvascular level using feedforward and feedback control over the release of vasoactive substances and by local mechanical effects.  However, both the structure and function of muscle microvascular networks are impaired in metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes mellites. In this presentation I will discuss our development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques based on a blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast for imaging of skeletal muscle microvascular function.  After discussion the importance of microvascular function to metabolic health, I will discuss our studies of the biophysical mechanisms of BOLD contrast in muscle, the development and application of imaging methods for studying microvascular function and dysfunction, and our applications of these methods to obesity and type 2 diabetes mellites.
