The Graduate College Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Office is excited to host a book review of ‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks’ in honor of the 2022 Black History Month theme, Black Health and Wellness. Henrietta Lacks was a poor Black woman that died of cervical cancer in 1951. Cells taken from her body (without her knowledge) became the first human cell line to be established in culture. HeLa cells were used to advance medical research from the development of a vaccine for polio, to the identification of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus which led to Nobel Prizes for the scientists that discovered it.

Join us virtually as we explore the life of the woman that provided the world with a continuous gift during Black History Month.

Chapter Review Order:

Part One – LIFE, Thursday, February 10, 2022

Part Two – DEATH, Thursday, February 17, 2022

Part Three – IMMORTALITY, Thursday, February 24, 2022
