Can Research “Graduate?” Paths for Research Impact Beyond Academia

Why do YOU do the research you do?

University researchers draw their motivation from many sources… a desire to solve puzzles, discover something new, or perhaps expand the frontier of their field. If your research inspiration also includes broader societal impacts—solutions to eventually advance the goals of efficient manufacturing, clean air, better building materials, green energy, human health, or any other good thing—this talk is for you.

In “Can Research “Graduate”?” Dr. Chitambar will discuss how university research can make its way out of academic labs and into real-world use. Attendees will learn a bit about the history of university tech transfer (including what didn’t work!), learn about the role and types of intellectual property that can help with this process, and see examples of research from UIUC peers and predecessors that has successfully “graduated” from UIUC.
