Our contemporary moment offers no shortage of politically charged and divisive rhetoric that can make classroom discussion feel fraught. In this presentation, Prof. Courtney Dorroll will share strategies to help teachers at all levels and student teachers create a supportive space for them to discuss these challenges, as well as begin to develop goals and identify potential strategies for productive student dialogue around difficult topics. Prof. Dorroll draws upon her own experiences teaching Islamic Studies and will share examples of in-class student activities for structured dialogue and multiple-viewpoint reflection that can be adapted to a variety of topics. Participants are encouraged to come to the presentation with an example of a challenging topic or a strategy or in-class activity that they have had success with in the past.
