This summer, the Office of External Fellowships will pilot a four-day writing lab designed to facilitate a successful summer of proposal writing for graduate students in the social sciences and humanities.
The Lab is most appropriate for those applying for fellowships with fall 2025 deadlines. Eligible students will be preparing applications for external fellowships (funded by a federal agency, private foundation, corporation, etc.) that require research proposals. While there are no restrictions regarding stage of study, applicants for postdoctoral fellowships will have the lowest priority.
The Lab will be held in person at the Graduate College from Tuesday, June 3, through Friday, June 6, from 9 AM to 12 PM each day. Applications will only be accepted from students who can attend in full.
Participants will benefit from a workshop on writing effective fellowship proposals and structured writing exercises focusing on audience, literature reviews, research plans, and other components of a competitive fellowship proposal. Students will also spend dedicated time writing independently and develop a timeline for completing their proposal drafts by the end of the summer.
Students must complete an application form and advisors must confirm their support via the brief nomination form by the extended deadline of May 14. Acceptance will be confirmed by Monday, May 19.
