Abstract: Noriyasu Li, who is a Program Manager at Alexa International, will take you behind the scenes and talk about what linguists do at Alexa in Amazon. First, he will provide an overview of the voice assistant technology and natural language understanding (NLU) structure in Alexa. He will also share examples of interesting cases that make language challenging for Alexa, go over interesting cases from building Japanese NLU models, and also talk about how language teams function at Amazon. Finally, he will discuss the market today for linguists in industry, how it has changed over the years, and how to prepare for the field if that is something you choose to pursue over academia. This talk is intended to provide students and faculty to gain knowledge on what linguists do at Amazon.
