Our theme for the 5th Annual Sociolinguistics Symposium is aimed at investigating and understanding the concepts of diversity, difference, and dialects in various contexts. This includes (but is not limited to), for example, examining the distinction between diversity and distinction—as in the postcolonial writings of Bhabha—and where language sits within it. Our first 2-day SoSy event will take place in person on 2-3 March, 2023 at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus.
Our 2023 plenary speakers are:
- Rakesh Bhatt, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- Lydia Catedral, City University of Hong Kong
- Jennifer Cramer, University of Kentucky
- Alexandra Johnston, Georgetown University
- Shalini Shankar, Northwestern University

ILLS is a general linguistics conference open to all subfields that will take place on March 3-4, 2023. If you are interested in ILLS, you can find more information and the call for papers at: http://ills.linguistics.illinois.edu/
Please note, you are welcome to submit abstracts to both SoSy and ILLS; however, the same abstract will not be accepted for both events.
