The Sociolinguistics Symposium at UIUC call for abstracts is ending soon, but we have extended our deadline! Please submit your abstract by December 23rd for consideration to present at the 5th annual SoSy under the theme “Diversity, Difference, and Dialects” taking place in Urbana, IL.
We welcome submissions on research dealing with any aspects regarding the intersection of language and society.
Our theme this year is aimed at investigating and understanding the concepts of diversity, difference, and dialects in various contexts. This includes (but is not limited to), for example, examining the distinction between diversity and distinction—as in the postcolonial writings of Bhabha—and where language sits within it. Our first 2-day SoSy event will take place in person on March 2-3, 2023 at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus.

Submissions are limited to two abstracts per author: one single author abstract and one multi-author abstract OR two multi-author abstracts. The student must be the first author and presenter. Abstracts should be a maximum of 500 words, with one extra page allowed for images, data, and/or references. Full references are not necessary; but if used – please use the (Author, Year) format. Abstracts should be submitted in PDF format with NO IDENTIFYING INFORMATION of the presenter in the document.

SoSy is held in conjunction with the Illinois Language and Linguistics Society (ILLS) conference. ILLS is a general linguistics conference open to all subfields that will take place on March 3-4, 2023.
