Fundamental Physics of Mach 7+ Hypersonic Propulsion
Hypersonic scramjets operating at high Mach numbers require a unique understanding of relevant gas dynamics and reactive chemistry to ensure that maximum thrust can be generated with minimal loss in efficiency. Key physics that govern the design of various components in a hypersonic scramjet flowpath will be presented using both experimental data obtained in the ‘Arc Heated Combustion Tunnel (ACT-II)’ at the University of Illinois and theoretical modeling of key phenomena. Concepts such as inlet design, scram to ram transition, unstart mitigation, stabilization of combustion, and nozzle performance will be included. The physics discussed here will present critical guidelines for design of both commercial and military hypersonic propulsion systems in the future.

 

About the Speaker
Dr. Tonghun Lee is the Bei Tse Chao and May Chao Professor in the Department of Mechanical Science & Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His research is focused on utilizing advanced laser and optical diagnostics for study of next generation aero propulsion concepts such as hypersonic scramjets, compact UAVs, and integration of sustainable aviation fuels. Professor Lee is the academic lead for the Department of Defense Center for UAS Propulsion (CUP), and a joint research staff at Sandia National Laboratory. He is the recipient of the AFOSR and ONR Young Investigator Program Awards and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers for development of advanced diagnostics in high-speed propulsion systems.
