Abstract
Many engineering applications involve complex fluid dynamic processes, such as multiphase energy transfer, reactions, and high-speed flows. This talk will review several such flows of interest to the national security missions of Sandia National Laboratories, including liquid atomization, post-detonation fireballs, and hypersonic aero-optics To enable quantitative measures in these harsh environments, we will discuss the advancement of digital holography, extinction imaging, and wavefront sensing. Despite the breath of this work, we will show how each these diagnostics are fundamentally understood to quantify the scattering and absorption of light described by Maxwell’s equations.
About the Speaker
Daniel R. Guildenbecher is a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dr. Guildenbecher’s research develops experimental diagnostics of multiphase and combusting flows, including applications to explosives, energetics, hypersonics and other topics of interest to Sandia’s national security missions. Dr. Guildenbecher received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 2009. Prior to joining Sandia, Dr. Guildenbecher was a Visiting Professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (2009-2010) and Purdue University (2010-2011). He is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a Member of the Optical Society of America.
