Characterizing bias, precision, and sampling efficiency of commonly used electrofishing sampling designs in Midwestern lentic systems

Advisor: Dr. Jeffrey A Stein

Population assessments are a fundamental tool used by fishery managers to obtain demographic information about communities of interest. Choice of sampling design used in these assessments will alter the validity of resulting data by influencing the levels of bias and precision included. To understand the magnitude of bias and precision associated with commonly used sampling designs, I used simulation models based on an extensive four-lake, multi-season dataset to evaluate sampling design performance and recommend a sampling protocol for small to mid-size impoundments in the Midwest. Additionally, I assessed the sampling effort required to obtain accurate estimates of population parameters while limiting sampling bias under each design to optimize sampling effort and conserve limited resources available to resource managers
