The brain exhibits a remarkable ability to adapt its response properties to constantly changing environmental and behavioral demands. Sensory systems have provided an essential window into understanding both the biological mechanisms and behavioral consequences of this experience-dependent plasticity. This seminar will summarize recent work examining loudness perception and plasticity in the central auditory system and how pathological changes to these processes contribute to auditory perceptual disruptions in rodent models of hearing loss and neurodevelopmental disorders.
