A growing appreciation for brain cellular diversity has shined a light on the excitability and rich signaling repertoire of non-neuronal cells named astrocytes, and their capacity to influence cellular processes that underlie circuit function. This has crystallizing the possibility of an astrocytic basis to the cellular correlates of brain computation, behavior and mental health. Research in my lab explores the conditions that determine astrocyte activity and outputs, the impacts of astrocyte signaling at the circuit and behavioral levels, and the computational and biomedical opportunities of astrocyte outputs on neural circuits.
