This symposium will center on three panels that feature people who have worked with and learned from Dr. Viruell-Fuentes in various capacities, including research collaborators, former students, and public health professionals. The symposium is a space to gather to reflect on and honor Dr. Viruell-Fuentes' outstanding scholarship, mentorship, and impact on the field of public health. Dr. Viruell-Fuentes passed away on August 23, 2020. She was a leading scholar in the area of race, health, and Latina/o immigration. She was most recently working on a Fulbright-supported ethnographic study of the ways in which return migration (whether voluntary or due to deportation) to a migrant-sending community in central Mexico impacted the health and well-being of returned migrants, their families, and communities.
