The history of Latina/o/x students in higher education is part of a larger genealogy of activism. The La Casa & Latina/Latino Studies murals, parts of which have returned to our campus and are being celebrated today, are a symbol of this legacy of activism and student claims of belonging in higher education universities like the University of Illinois. From Chicago to Champaign, Latina/o students in the 1970s began to challenge their limited status in institutions of higher learning, such as the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Latina/Latino Studies alums Dr. Mirelsie Velazquez (UIUC, B.A 2004, M.A. 2007, Ph.D. 2010) and Xavier Ramirez (UIUC, B.A. 2015) will speak on the need to historically document and learn from the history of Latina/o/x students within these institutions.
