A reboot of the classic 1961 musical in which a modern-day Romeo and Juliet are involved in New York street gangs. Highly criticized from the brown facing of white actors, the original version garnered Rita Moreno an Oscar for Supporting Actress. Rebooted in 2021 by Steven Spielberg, this version promises more Latinx actors and less offensive lyrics within a tightly choreographed musical battle for control of the turf. The situation becomes complicated when a gang members falls in love with a rival's sister.
