Please join us to honor Professor Laxmikant "Sanjay" Kale upon his retirement from the University of Illinois.
Professor Laxmikant Kale is the Paul and Cynthia Saylor Professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Kale joined the department in 1985 and has spent his career working primarily on parallel computing. He has focused in particular on enhancing performance and productivity via adaptive runtime systems, and grounded all of his research in the belief that interdisciplinary research yields the kind of well-honed abstractions that will have a long-term impact on the state-of-art.
His collaborations include the widely used Gordon Bell Award-winning biomolecular simulation program NAMD, as well as other collaborations in computational cosmology, quantum chemistry, rocket simulation, space-time meshes, and other unstructured mesh applications.
Kale is also director of the Parallel Programming Laboratory and takes great pride in his group's success in distributing and supporting software embodying his research ideas, including the Charm++ adaptive runtime system, Adaptive MPI, and the BigSim framework. He and his team won the HPC Challenge award at Supercomputing 2011, for their entry based on Charm++.
Kale is a fellow of the ACM and IEEE, and a winner of the 2012 IEEE Sidney Fernbach award.
He has also been an influential advisor to a number of students, graduating more than 40 PhD students and 47 MS students in his 34 years in the department. Recent PhD graduates from Kale’s group have joined top companies such as IBM Research and Google, among others.
Kale received the B.Tech degree in Electronics Engineering from Benares Hindu University, Varanasi, India in 1977, and a M.E. degree in Computer Science from Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India, in 1979. He received a PhD in computer science in from State University of New York, Stony Brook, in 1985.
Before coming to Illinois, Kale worked as a scientist at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research from 1979 to 1981.
