Abstract: The Southern Dynasties period witnessed an intense rivalry for literary eminence between the aristocrat families from Northern China like those from those from the prominent Wang and Xie families and the native literary luminaries represented by Shen Yue 沈約(441-513. It was this intense rivalry that spurred Shen Yue to strive for excellence in the writing of histories and poetical works. A comparative study of Shen’s Rhapsody on the Suburban Estate and Xie Lingyun’s 謝靈運(385-433) Rhapsody on the Mountain Residence shall reveal the complex psychology behind Shen’s pursuit of literary creation.
