Program Description

The Center for Global Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, is pleased to announce funding to support the internationalization of community colleges nationwide. We invite applications from faculty, librarians, and administrators interested in expanding global studies curricula, instruction in less commonly taught languages, library collections, or international education programs at their home institutions. Projects for minority-serving institutions are particularly welcome. During their stay, Fellows can work one-on-one with international and area studies reference librarians and explore the unlimited print and online resources of the University of Illinois Library.

Resources

The International and Area Studies Library (IASL) offers an extensive service that facilitates access to a wide range of materials related to globalization and global and regional studies. These collections come from Africa, China, the E.U., Japan, Korea, Latin America and the Caribbean, North Africa and the Middle East, Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and South Asia. IASL provides access to workstations; print, digital, and microform collections, online research resources; reference collections, and current issues of over 1,000 periodicals and 110 newspapers in Western and less commonly taught languages. Additionally, the International Studies Research Lab (ISRL) participants may set up individual consultation sessions with the Global Studies Librarian and/or other international reference specialists who can provide individualized support and guidance on developing curricula, library collections, and international education programs. During your stay, you will receive courtesy borrowing privileges for our library collection.

For language instructors, the International Studies Research Lab offers the opportunity to conduct research and prepare curricula on less commonly taught languages: Arabic, Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Czech, French, German, Modern Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Quechua, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, Ukrainian, Uzbek, Wolof, Yiddish, and Zulu.

For more information on library resources, consult the International Studies Research Lab Library and Resource Guide and Collection Highlights at Illinois. These guides highlight only a small fraction of resources available for patrons visiting Illinois. You may wish to contact the International Reference Service to explore additional resources.

Dates

The ISRL will be held from July 20 – July 31, 2020. Scholars are typically eligible for up to 7 nights lodging.

Application Procedure

All applicants are required to submit an online application, a project proposal, CV, and a letter of institutional endorsement. For more details on application requirements, please consult our Application Instructions.

Applications must be submitted by March 5, 2020 to be considered.

The application for the 2020 International Studies Research Lab can be found here.

Library Access and Support

During the ISRL, participants receive full borrowing privileges and complete access to collections at the University of Illinois Library. The dates of ISRL usually fall during the University’s Summer Session 2. Please check the Library portal at the beginning of June for a full schedule. When planning your trip, please also be aware that in July, the library is open for limited hours on weekends.

Collaborative Workshop

The International Studies Research Lab is part of a joint initiative between the Center for Global Studies, the International and Area Studies Library, the Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center, the European Union Center, and the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies, that aims to promote the internationalization of education in Illinois and nationwide. Participants will be invited to share their work and establish collaborations in a day-long workshop that will take place on Friday July 24, 2020. Individuals specializing in community college engagement will be guest speakers, offering to participants insight into the process of internationalizing curriculum, programs, and library collections.

Please consult the 2020 schedule, when available, for more information. If you are interested, please indicate your wish to participate in the workshop in the application form.
