Joe Barnes is the Chief Digital Risk Officer for the University of Illinois System. He is responsible for establishing and maintaining the U of I System's Digital Risk Management (DRM) program. Digital Risk encompasses the challenges related to continuous change and increasing complexity in the U of I System's operations, technology, and threat environments as they relate to cybersecurity, privacy, compliance, business continuity, and risk management. Joe serves as a dedicated advocate for DRM and supports the implementation of the recommendations made by the System-Wide Task Force on Cybersecurity, formulates cybersecurity strategy, collaborates across the U of I System to promote a risk-aware culture, and advises the President, Chancellors, CIOs, and other System leaders on risk assessment and mitigation as it relates to information technology, privacy, and cybersecurity. Joe has more than twenty-five years of experience in information technology, in both the public and private sectors; for the past fifteen years, his work has focused on privacy, information security, and risk. He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional. Mr. Barnes holds a BA from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and an MBA from Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi.
