Abstract: 
Over the past decade at UIUC, Karle Flanagan has taught introductory data science and statistics to over 30,000 students. Her passion is making data science, statistics, and math accessible to all students regardless of their major or background. Her current work and research focuses on Data Science DISCOVERY, a course that has grown 1,000 percent in the last 3 years at UIUC and is also available to anyone in the world who wants to learn data science. This symposium talk will share the vision for data science at UIUC, how DISCOVERY has grown exponentially, and the plan for continued exponential growth in the coming years.
 

Bio: 
Karle Flanagan is a Teaching Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She has taught introductory data science and statistics to thousands of students at UIUC since 2014. She recently became the Director of Inclusive Data Science Education for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS). She has been awarded many teaching awards such as the Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the Illinois Student Government Teaching Excellence Award, and the Department of Statistics Award for Excellence in Instruction. Her research interests include the teaching and learning of statistics and data science, specifically how students can use data science to explore social issues.
