Hour of CodeTM is a nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org to
introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming. No
experience is needed! Join Illinois Computer Science students, faculty, staff, and volunteers at the
Thomas M. Siebel Center for Computer Science for support through the Code.org guided curriculum.
Open to the public, this free event is held each December.

Why Computer Science?
Computer science is foundational. Every 21st-century student should have the opportunity to learn how to create technology. Computer science is changing every industry on the planet. The basics ofcomputer science also help nurture creativity and problem-solving skills, and prepare students for any future career.

Computing is the #1 source of wages in the U.S. There are more than 500,000 computing jobs open
nation-wide, but last year only 42,969 computer science  students graduated into the workforce.
