About the event and eligibility

The ARL2 will present teams of four active and enrolled students of an academic institution to be partnered with a team of two AbbVie colleagues in a competition to develop the best reinforcement learning algorithm.

Students from any continental United States based college or university will form their own teams of four and apply through this website to be considered.  Multiple teams from the same institution may apply.  The A(RL)^2 coordination team will select 10 teams from the pool of applicants to participate in the league.

The event will kick off in Chicago with a required session on March 18 where the selected teams will be given hands-on instruction by AWS experts and official Deepracer pit crew members in how to develop reinforcement learning algorithms for the Deepracer platform.  They will see live demonstrations with actual Deepracer cars and meet with their mentors to begin to ideate and develop their approach - as well as craft their team identity.

The league will feature two virtual races where all 10 teams will race their algorithms in a simulator to assess their performance.  The top teams after the two virtual races will be invited to race in the Grand Finale which will be held in person in Chicago in the summer of 2020.  At the Grand Finale, the top algorithms will be loaded into real Deepracer cars where they will compete against each other for the A(RL)^2 cup and a trip (registration, hotel, and airfare) to AWS re:Invent 2020 in Las Vegas.

Additional Information

Participating teams will be provided with AWS accounts and a fixed budget of resources for them to use in the competition.

All four members of the team must be present at the kickoff event on March 18, 2020 in Chicago in order to participate in the league.  Travel to the kickoff event is the responsibility of the team or the academic institution.

Travel to the Grand Finale event in June will be the responsibility of the team or the academic institution.

The A(RL)^2 coordinators reserve the right to change or adjust the rules as necessary at any time during the league's schedule.  The A(RL)^2 coordinators also reserve the right to add or remove teams from the competition.
