This is an overview on martensite, initiated with a brief history of Martensite art-engineering-science. Art started from archaeometallurgy and epic; while the engineering of Martensite, Adolf Marten (1884), has been followed by the science of PTMC. Latter, the scientific gaps in our present understanding of martensitic transformation and martensite microstructure has been highlighted. Final, results from recent research (at IITB) have been presented: on (i) ‘Austenite Plasticity and Martensite Microstructures’ and on (ii) ‘the ‘neglected’ glissile interface’. In (i), high resolution electron backscattered diffraction (HR-EBSD) plus dynamical simulations of HR-EBSD patterns established the state of residual stresses in the reconstructed austenite phase. This was then used in bring out the martensite variant selection in an interaction energy-based approach. In (ii), the role of hydrogen on the growth selection of martensite would be explored in terms of niche experiments and atomistic simulations.
Keywords: Residual Stress, Austenite, Martensite, Microstructure, Variant Selection, Hydrogen.
