Abstract: Diamonds (from Greek word Adámas, meaning “unconquerable” or “unbreakable") are hard, optically transparent, and conduct heat well. The spin dependent photoluminescence of the popular Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond provides a versatile and precise platform for nanoscale measurement of various physical phenomena, such as magnetic fields, temperature, and strain. This talk will cover ways to make NV centers, how they work, and what sort of interesting science you can do with them.
