Enhancing Manufacturing Resilience Through Interoperability of Digital Twins

Abstract: Digital Twin (DT) technology is evolving rapidly, offering virtual models that simulate and connect with complex physical systems across their entire lifecycle. By maintaining real-time data exchange and feedback loops with their physical counterparts, digital twins enable the monitoring, diagnostics, prediction, and optimization of performance. This integration reduces development cycles, accelerates system reconfiguration, simplifies complexity, and enhances overall reliability.

In manufacturing, various types of DTs can be utilized to support system development and operation. This presentation will examine the essential components necessary to convert a data model of a manufacturing system into a digital twin. Using a robotic system as a case study, the presentation will highlight the development of a library of robot grippers designed to support multiple DT environments. The objective is to develop a software-neutral library of digital twin assets tailored to meet the specific needs of manufacturing. An automotive industry case example will also be presented.

Biography: Ali is an Assistant Professor at Oakland University and an expert in smart manufacturing, digital twins, and Industry 4.0-inspired manufacturing systems. He directs an Intelligent Manufacturing Lab. Ali has contributed to digital twins in different manufacturing domains (i.e., wind energy, cobots, electronics manufacturing, etc.) and has published in the Journal of Manufacturing Systems, Science Robotics, CIRP Annals, and several other outlets. Ali received his Ph.D. in Manufacturing Systems from the University of Southern Denmark in 2020.
