The Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute (IHSI) is excited to support Illinois researchers interested in pursuing funding with the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). In partnership with the Office of Proposal Development, IHSI will host an ARPA-H ideation workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at NCSA.

ARPA-H released their first broad agency announcement (BAA) on March 15, 2023. ARPA-H is looking for revolutionary ideas that will accelerate better health outcomes for everyone. They have identified four initial focus areas that are a priority for investment: health science futures, scalable solutions, proactive health, and resilient systems. ARPA-H will also be making targeted investments in tools that enable quantitative measurements of health outcomes, promote end-user adoption, facilitate participatory research, and advance relevant Ethical, Legal, and Societal Implications (ELSI) topics. Proposals are being accepted on a rolling basis until March 14, 2024. Only three concurrent awards are allowed per institution. Illinois will be running dynamic limited submission-type process for this funding call to strategically select the strongest proposals to send to ARPA-H.

The ideation workshop will provide information on ARPA-H and the BAA, help generate or refine project ideas, and connect researchers who are interested in applying to this opportunity. Eve Granatosky, PhD, of Lewis-Burke Associates, LLC, will join us virtually to give an overview of ARPA-H, the BAA, and advice on proposal preparation. The presentation will be followed by a networking lunch, which will include a general discussion of the solicitation and internal submission process to answer additional questions before breaking into smaller group discussions according to the four focus areas of the BAA.

BAA Focus Areas

Health Science Futures: seeks to develop the innovative tools, technologies, and platforms that can be applied to a broad range of diseases

Scalable Solutions: seeks to improve access and affordability and addressing health ecosystem challenges that impede effective and timely development and distribution of healthcare and disease response at a scale that reaches every citizen regardless of geography or resources

Proactive Health: aims to improve personal health and wellness to reduce the likelihood that people require medical intervention or minimize the time that they remain in acute care through accelerated recovery and regeneration capabilities

Resilient Systems: aims to create capabilities, develop mechanisms, and accelerate system integrations to enhance stability in the face of disruptive events
