We look forward to seeing you in person on Tuesday, April 11, at 2:00pm. Join in person at 3401 Siebel Center for Computer Science, 201 N. Goodwin Ave.

Abstract:  Immersive content such as 360-degree videos and volumetric videos has become an essential component of applications including augmented, virtual, and mixed reality.  It enables numerous use cases in education, training, healthcare, public safety, entertainment, etc. A key challenge of delivering immersive content to mobile devices is that it usually requires high bandwidth and low latency from the network. In this talk, I will introduce my recent work in this area, focusing on volumetric video streaming that offers the six-degree-of-freedom motion of viewers. A common approach I have benefitted from in my research is to explore the synergy of networked systems, mobile computing, computer graphics, computer vision, and deep learning for boosting network efficiency and quality of experience for human-centered immersive systems. I will demonstrate the necessity and efficacy of this approach in the design of several such systems. I will conclude with a brief discussion of my planned research on interactive holographic communication, which can potentially alleviate Zoom fatigue in remote collaboration.

Bio: Bo Han is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at George Mason University. His research interests are in the areas of networked systems, mobile computing, and wireless networking. His current research focuses on immersive video streaming, augmented, virtual, and mixed reality, and edge computing. Before joining George Mason, he was a Principal Scientist at AT&T Labs Research. Along with his collaborators, he has built several mobile immersive systems that can balance utility, efficiency, user experience, and security & privacy.
