TITLE: "System-Level Electric Machine Optimization for Aircraft Propulsion System Applications"

ABSTRACT: Development of aircraft with fully electric propulsion systems entails that the specific requirements on the key subsystem performance metrics must be met. High-specific-power (HSP) electric machines are deployed to provide fully electric aircraft propulsion. In this presentation, we present an optimization method that allows the effective representation of the specific constraints of electric machine design in aircraft application. We discuss the tradeoffs between specific power and efficiency to demonstrate the effective use of additional degrees of freedom to reach the higher power density requirements in aircraft machine designs.

SPEAKER: Peter Xiao, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, UIUC

TITLE: "Spoke Suspension System Manufacturing Update"

ABSTRACT: Superconducting (SC) machines can attain higher specific power than that of conventional electric machines due to the much higher current density and the absence of back iron. However, the thermal management in the cryogenic environment via the conventional torque transfer mechanism is challenging. We describe the proposed deployment of a spoke-suspension system in the SC machine design to transfer torque with the minimized heat transfer to allow cooling by by a single cryocooler. We discuss key issues in the construction of the hardware and present the most recent developments in the construction of the spoke suspension system.
