TITLE: "Graph-Theoretic Techniques to Determine Fault Location and Service Restoration in Distribution Networks"

ABSTRACT: Distribution network faults typically result in outages. However, the extent of the outage in terms of the number of customers impacted by an outage and its duration depends on the grid depend on the grid operator actions. The location of the fault may be provided to field crews in order to initiate the required repairs. In particular, the grid sections downstream of the fault can avoid a prolonged outage, once they are connected (restored) to alternate sources. Given various resource and crew constraints, the decision on the assignment of sections for restoration to the available sources requires the solution of an optimization problem. The presentation discusses the application of graph-theoretic techniques to determine the fault location and the service restoration procedure.  We describe the effective solution of the mixed-integer optimization problem via the use of mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) approach.

BIO: Yoav Sharon is an alumnus of the University of Illinois. He obtained his Ph.D. here in Electrical Engineering under the supervision of Daniel Liberzon and Yi Ma. His field of study was control systems and it was during his postdoctoral appointment at MIT that he started his involvement in power systems. After his post doc, he joined S&C Electric in Chicago. He is a licensed professional engineer and a senior member of IEEE. He has been granted 10 patents to date.
