Jonathon K. Schuh, Teaching Assistant Professor

Presentation Title:  Utilizing Water Towers for Pumped Storage Hydropower

Abstract:  Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) stores electrical energy as gravitational potential energy. Water is pumped from a lower elevation reservoir to a higher one and later flows back to the lower reservoir through a turbine. For areas with naturally large elevation changes, PSH has been an effective way to store excess energy produced from renewable sources. However, areas that have relatively small elevation changes (such as the Midwest of the United States) require man-made height differences for PSH. Water towers could provide one method for obtaining the required height differences. Here, three different commercially available water tower designs are examined numerically to determine an optimal system configuration for energy storage.

Biography:  Dr. Schuh is a Teaching Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He received his BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering in 2013 and 2015, his PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in 2018, and his MBA in 2021, all from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His technical interests include electrical energy storage, and his teaching interests include improving learning outcomes in engineering curriculum. 

 

Olga Mironenko, Teaching Assistant Professor

Presentation Title:  Student Learning Outcomes in Two Fundamental ECE Courses with Multi-Modal Delivery: A Case Study During COVID Response

Abstract:  In the face of a post-COVID pandemic situation, many Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) undergraduate students choose synchronous/asynchronous online course delivery over in-person instruction. In this talk, we investigate the learning outcomes of students in two multi-modal delivery sophomore-level ECE core courses (signals & systems and introductory programming) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign during COVID response in spring 2021. Additionally, we examine students’ satisfaction with their final course letter grades.

Biography:  Dr. Olga Mironenko is a Teaching Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She received a specialist degree in Physics from Omsk F.M. Dostoevsky State University, Russia in 2009, and she received a Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Delaware in 2020. Her current interests include improvement of introductory analog signal processing and power systems courses, training for graduate teaching assistants, and mentoring of under-represented students in ECE.
