Presentation and Other Verbal Communication Skills

This session will focus on building your oral communication skills. Topics include strategies for making high quality oral and poster presentations.

Professors Mohammed El-Kebir, Brighten Godfrey, and Klara Nahrstedt will be this session's panelists.

Mohammed

Mohammed El-Kebir is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining Illinois, he was a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University and Brown University. He received his PhD in October 2015 at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) and VU University Amsterdam in the Netherlands. El-Kebir’s main research is in combinatorial optimization algorithms for problems in computational biology, with a particular focus on cancer genomics. He received the National Science Foundation CISE Research Initiation Initiative (CRII) Award in 2019 and the CAREER Award in 2021.

Brighten

Brighten Godfrey is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a technical director at VMware. He co-founded and served as CTO of network verification pioneer Veriflow through its 2019 acquisition by VMware. He received his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley in 2009. His research interests lie in the design of networked systems and algorithms. He is a winner of the ACM SIGCOMM Rising Star Award, the Sloan Research Fellowship, and the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and has chaired several conferences including ACM HotNets 2014, the Symposium on SDN Research 2016, and ACM SIGCOMM 2022.

 

Klara

Klara Nahrstedt is the Grainger Distinguished Chair in Engineering Professor in the Computer Science Department, and the Director of Coordinated Science Laboratory in the Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests are directed toward tele-immersive systems, end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS), resource management in large scale distributed systems and networks, Internet of Things (IoT) systems, and real-time security and privacy in cyber-physical systems. She is the co-author of multimedia books “Multimedia: Computing, Communications and Applications”, published by Prentice Hall, and “Multimedia Systems”, published by Springer Verlag. She is the recipient multiple awards such as the IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award, ACM SIGMM Technical Achievement Award, and the Grainger College of Engineering Drucker Award. She was the elected chair of the ACM Special Interest Group in Multimedia (SIGMM) from 2007-2013. She was the general co-chair and TPC co-chair of many international conferences including ACM Multimedia, IEEE Percom, IEEE/ACM Internet of Things Design and Implementation (IoTDI), IEEE SmartgridComm) and others. Klara Nahrstedt received her Diploma in Mathematics from Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany in 1985. In 1995, she received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Computer and Information Science. She is Fellow of ACM, IEEE, AAAS, and Member of the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina Society), and USA National Academy of Engineering.
