Abstract:

Bioengineering is a highly inclusive field of study that thrive with an interdisciplinary curriculum. It is unquestionable that our future bioengineers need to be familiar with a wide variety of subjects including biology, chemistry, thermodynamics, electrical and mechanical engineering. However, both employers and new graduates feel a disconnection between the knowledge learned in college and skill sets needed by industry. In this seminar, we will explore a learner-centered curriculum that is focused on student's career choices and keeps abreast of the times. Further, we will discuss the opportunities that we can provide for students to explore their career interest, and learner-centered teaching methodologies that can increase engagement.

Speaker Bio:

Yi Wen is a Ph.D. candidate in bioengineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He is also an Environmental Toxicology Scholar fellowship and a Mavis Future Faculty Fellowship recipient. Yi received B.S. dual degrees in biological engineering and biochemistry at Purdue University. For his work as a teaching assistant, he was titled as the Outstanding Instructor on the List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent multiple times. Besides his research to incorporate novel bioengineering tools into toxicology studies, he keeps up with the modern pedagogies and obtained the Graduate Teacher Certificate and Teacher Scholar Certificate from CITL. Yi has a vision to increase engagement of UIUC bioengineering students in industry and research.
