Title: Helping Vehicles Make Safer Choices for Themselves

Abstract:
General Motors seeks a “Zero, Zero, Zero Future” where, first and foremost, crashes are reduced if not entirely eliminated. Likewise, in order for autonomous vehicles to be perceived as dependable, they must first realize Isaac Asimov’s first law of robotics: do no harm. So, it is imperative that necessary methods be applied to enable and ensure that an AV can dependably recognize, or detect, the risk of the crash to avoid it. Otherwise, it must recognize its own potential shortcomings as the only possible way forward, both literally and principle. Whether through ride service, consumer, or commercial vehicles, building this future of dependable AVs first comes by demonstrating they are, if nothing else, able to maintain reasonable control, regardless of circumstance or malfunction.
