Physics - Colloquium

The magnetic moment of the muon is a unique property of a fundamental particle.  Not only can the muon’s magnetic moment be measured with great precision, it can also be calculated with comparable precision, with deviations between measurement and expectation are sensitive to physics contributions beyond the Standard Model.  Two decades ago, Brookhaven experiment E-821 reported a value for the magnetic moment of the muon that was 3 sigma away from the theoretical expectation.  In the time since, considerable theoretical progress has been achieved, and a new measurement undertaken at Fermilab.  In this special colloquium, members of the UIUC team will report the first results from this new experiment.
