WHERE: Room 4070, ECEB

SPEAKER: Dr. Kathleen Amm, BNL

TITLE: The Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) "Superconducting Magnet Programs: Past, Present and Future"

ABSTRACT: BNL has a rich history in the development of superconducting magnet technology. From the Brookhaven Summer School on Superconductivity at the birth of large-scale superconducting magnets, to the present day Nb3Sn magnets developed for the High Luminosity Upgrade at CERN, the superconducting magnet team at BNL has been at the leading edge of superconducting magnet development. Brookhaven has been and will be increasing its collaboration in superconducting magnet development outside of its core accelerator magnet programs. This presentation highlights the recent history and current key superconducting magnet developments at BNL and provides a forward-focused perspective on where the BNL team and the magnet community are headed.

BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Kathleen Amm obtained her Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics from Florida State University, and a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Physics at the University of Toronto.  She has over 25 years of experience in superconductivity and magnet design. Her primary research areas of interest include MRI and medical applications of superconductivity, superconducting electric machines, high temperature superconductivity and material properties at low temperatures, and permanent magnets. Kathleen is currently the head of the Superconducting magnet division at BNL, where she works with her team to deliver innovative accelerator and high field magnet technology. Kathleen participates in several professional societies – she is a senior member IEEE, member of CSA and ASME, Board member of Applied Superconductivity Conference and Superconductor Science and Technology and a former member of Cryogenic Engineering Conference Board and GE Women’s Network Steering Committee. She is also DFSS Black Belt Certified and MATRIZ certified.
