Abstract:
While instructors emphasize the importance of understanding course materials over grades, students often prioritize grades as the ultimate measure of success in their learning journey. Therefore, I aim to create a learning environment and methodology that bridges the gap between learning and achieving good grades. This approach centers around fostering students' natural curiosity for acquiring new knowledge. Specifically, within this environment, students encounter a seamless learning experience where all course components are compiled in one platform. Features are thoughtfully designed to cultivate an enjoyable learning experience as in games and play. Barriers preventing students from engaging with course materials are minimized to the greatest extent possible. Students are guided through reflections to align their learning goals with their values and aspirations, facilitating a deeper connection between academic pursuits and real-life objectives. Furthermore, students are assured of equitable treatment and inclusion within the study community, nurturing a sense of belonging and collaboration.
Bio:
Xiaoyun Fu is a Software Design Lecturer in the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) program at Purdue University, a position she has held since July 2023. She earned her Ph.D. in computer science from Iowa State University in 2023, where she gained valuable teaching experience across four semesters while instructing the course Theory of Computing. Before her doctoral studies, Fu completed her master's degree in chemistry at the University of Delaware in 2016, following her bachelor's degree in chemistry from Tianjin University in 2013. With a passion for undergraduate education, Fu's career aspiration is to excel as a dedicated teaching professor, contributing to the academic growth and success of students.
