College of Business and Management Faculty Research & Teaching Colloquium Series

Are we creating a society of degreed versus learned individuals? What can we do to engage super-connected “iGen” students of today with diminishing attention spans in our classrooms? How can we teach to instill excitement, curiosity, and a passion for life-long learning among our students? These are some of the challenges that continue to confront us in academia as educators.

Total Quality Management (TQM) is a philosophy that has been adopted and successfully applied since 1980s by companies to improve the quality of their outputs, namely, products and services.  This presentation discusses how we can borrow some ideas from the industrial world and apply a few key elements (Kaizen, Kano Model, and PDCA wheel) of the TQM philosophy in academia to improve the quality of our teaching output, namely, student learning.  In addition, it shares some of the lessons learned during my journey as an educator over the last 25 years that have shaped the five central pillars of my teaching philosophy.
