Data protection and privacy is a growing concern in a world nervous about the growth of “surveillance capitalism” and other potential abuses of access to personal data. This lecture series, cosponsored by the iSchool and the European Union Center, brings together campus and outside experts on informatics, cultural ideas about privacy, legal compliance and best practices, as well as global governance. The first speaker for our series will be a compliance expert in the University of Illinois Office of Ethics and Compliance, which developed an innovative strategy for helping the campus community comply with the European Union’s 2018 General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). David E. Grogan, associate director of university compliance, will give the talk, "A Risk-Based Approach to the GDPR."
