Angel Mounds, east of Evansville, Indiana is one of the largest Mississippian mound centers on the northeastern Mississippian frontier. Little is understood about the mound center's relationship with the surrounding communities or with other Mississippian centers in the Midwest. In this lecture, Research Archaeologist Elizabeth Watts Malouchos will review recent remote-sensing research at Angel Mounds and other outlying sites that suggest the importance of aligning residential and mound architecture to the movements of the moon. She will also discuss how the lunar landscape connected Angel Mounds to the broader Cahokian cosmology and to ancestral Middle Woodland histories.
