Join the CGS Team in welcoming John Levi Barnard (Professor of English & Comparative & World Literature, UIUC), on Wednesday, January 31st at noon in 306, Coble Hall for his talk, "Meat, Climate, and the Dystopia of the Present."Moving through a century of dystopian film and literature -- from The Jungle to Soylent Green and The Matrix -- this talk will explore the role of the animal food system in both American culture and the planetary crisis of climate change.

John Levi Barnard is an Associate Professor of English and Comparative and World Literature at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Professor Barnard's research and teaching focus on American literature and the environmental humanities. His recent work has appeared in American LiteratureAmerican QuarterlyResilience, and The Oxford Handbook of Twentieth-Century American Literature, and elsewhere. This talk is drawn from his current book project, The Edible and the Endangered: Food, Empire, Extinction, which traces the interrelated histories of US empire, animal food systems, and planetary ecological crisis.
